Freitag lab comprises a diverse team of highly creative, independent, and self-motivated research scientists.  We embrace our different social and academic backgrounds and strengths to learn from each other’s unique experience.

We work independently and value unique individual contributions to each project, but we also belong to the Freitag team and understand that working together and helping each other can lead to solutions of even most complex scientific problems and better outcomes for all of us.

We work honestly and hard to advance our team, as well as our individual research goals.  We value the leadership and vision of Prof. Freitag and understand that to remain on the cutting edge of science we must constantly search for new ideas, stay up to date with the latest scientific literature, and strive for excellence in everything we do.

As an undergraduate student, he majored in Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Botany, and for his master’s degree, he majored in Microbiology. His PhD project involved Type VII secretion system effector proteins at the host-pathogen interface in Staphylococcus aureus. He completed his PhD at the University of Warwick, UK, under the supervision of Dr Meera Unnikrishnan.

His interest in microbiology started during his undergrad studies, when he saw for the first time bacteria and immune cells interacting under the microscope. His current research interests focus on studying how the anesthetic agent propofol exacerbates Klebsiella pneumonia lung infection. His career goal is to establish an independent research group to study the complex mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction.

Giri’s favorite things to do outside the lab are play badminton, read philosophy books, and cook.

My advice for students is always to ask questions and never compare themselves to others; persistence is the key to finishing this journey.  Also, each student’s Ph.D. journey is unique so it can take you in different ways. Sometimes plans A and B don’t work but C ends up working. So, don’t fight with that just learn to pause and think about what this failed plan is teaching you. Learn as many skills as you can, I’m assuring that will help you a lot in your future career.  Also, Nancy’s mentor skills are awesome, and she will help you to succeed! Lastly, enjoy this journey because it is once in a lifetime!

Never give up, stay persistent and ask lots of questions! There will be times when you feel like nothing is working and those are the times to reevaluate things, re-read protocols, and papers and talk with Nancy or other members of the lab for help and/or guidance
